A Brief History of Women’s Kilts

While kilts have deep roots in Highland menswear, women’s kilted skirts emerged in the early 20th century as a stylish nod to tradition. Originally worn in Highland dance and school uniforms, they soon became a cultural staple—offering the grace of tartan with a feminine twist. Today, ladies' kilts are worn at formal events, cultural celebrations, and everyday fashion by women proud of their Scottish connection.

Each of our skirts is made from lightweight 9–10 oz. tartan wool and features:

• A flat apron front with 3/4-inch hand-pleated back for elegant movement

• Three buckle straps (two outside, one internal) for adjustable fit

• Over 500 tartans to choose from, including clan, district, and universal patterns

• A truly versatile and classic design—ideal for pairing with jackets, boots, or knitwear
